Booth's Babble
Winter Greetings
One of the down sides of bariatric surgery is the heightened awareness of the cold which many of you will be feeling now. The only recommendation to get around this is to put on more clothes and stay active! This is not an excuse to put on weight although many of us do over the colder months. One of the things that continually strikes me in the winter is that it is often warmer outside the house than inside.
For those of you in the first nine months following surgery it is vital that you are doing more than maintenance exercise if you want to lose substantial amounts of weight. This entails a significant amount of aerobic work such as brisk walking, running, cycling or the treadmill, cross trainer and the rowing machine in the gym. Swimming in many respects is the ideal exercise, it combined both aerobic and resistance training, is low impact and you don't get hot and sweaty!
Whatever aerobic exercise you do it is important you do it properly and regard it as an essential activity like sleeping, work or eating. For those of you like me who have never particularly enjoyed exercise then perhaps it is better to just regard it as work, a necessary evil!
A Cautionary Tale
Be careful with dietary advice and recommendations from gym staff particularly protein shakes that they sell. Many 'Nutritionists" are unfamiliar with weight loss surgery and your specific nutritional requirements.
Many protein shakes are high in calories which may sabotage your weight loss unbeknownst to you. If you are uncertain, it is wise to get the product details and ask Nikki first.
It's a good time to get the Crockpot out again. For those of you who still struggle with red meat try using the Crockpot if you haven't previously.
Wishing you all an active and energetic Winter!
Michael
