Preoperative preparation for weight loss surgery

Preoperative preparation is imperative and increases your chance of having both a short and a long term successful outcome that maximises the chances of reaching your weight loss objectives.

It is also important that you have some time to fully consider as to whether you wish to go through with surgery.

Following an initial consultation with Michael Booth, an information pack will be provided and an appointment made to see our dietitian. A fasting blood test will be requested. A tentative date for surgery will be discussed which you can work towards.

Our dietician will take a full dietary history and make suggestions as to how to diet effectively. Exercise will be encouraged, approximately 30 minutes per day walking (or equivalent) to build up cardiovascular fitness.

Two weeks before surgery (possibly longer, depending on your BMI and your weight loss progress) you will go on a very low calorie diet (OPTIFAST® VLCD). This dietary requirement is to ensure that prior to surgery the liver is greatly reduced in size and fat content, and it will also help you to lose weight. This two week process greatly assists the ease of surgery.

Focusing on this stage prior to surgery also helps you prepare for the post operative dietary stages.

You will see Michael Booth again prior to surgery who will be able to answer any further questions you may have and go over specific points of the surgery.
